Mind This Matter

Ponder of the Month

“Humans, walking and talking bags of water and trace chemicals that we are, have managed to convince well-organized sand to pretend to think like us.”

[ Quote taken from “Embracing weirdness: What it means to use AI as a (writing) tool” by Ethan Mollick ]

Food for Thought Recs

Book Recommendation:

  • Building a Second Brain: Tiago Forte explores a methodology of building your own knowledge collection system to enhance personal productivity and creativity in a world of vast information. By maintaining a “second brain”, it can help one remember, connect, and create thoughts and ideas in a way that best works for them.

Youtube Recommendation:

  • The Science of the “Self” - Big Think (4:39): Developmental biologist, Michael Levin, discusses how the “Self” arises from a cellular perspective. The mode of organization by drawing boundaries to define the self opens avenues for questioning and exploring our understanding of the “Self”.

Upcoming TV Series:

  • 3 Body Problem on Netflix: This science fiction novel & upcoming TV series explores the consequences of humanity's contact with an alien civilization and the complex challenges it poses for both science and society. Intertwines themes relating to physics, China’s Cultural Revolution, and technological advancement.

We hope you join us at cafe hours and our social events to connect with other members of the IoC community and explore different curiosities together. The time and location of our events are subject to change, so be sure to check in at our Instagram @ideasonconsciousness to stay in the loop as well as re-visit these monthly newsletters (which will be sent out the first Sunday of every month going forward). As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out if there is anything we can do to help support you or if you’d like to chat about your ideas on consciousness.

Have a happy September!
